Arthur had a barbershop in Breslau.  He went to Amsterdam to help out his brother Karl. Karl had left Germany for South America but had to return because he contracted malaria.  
 
When in Holland, Arthur wrote to his brother Rudolf that he had no intention of returning to Germany and that he should sell his barber shop.  From there, Arthur went to Portugal to sail to Montevideo, Uruguay.  He spent the war years in Montevideo, Uruguay
