Charles and his family were moved to the ghetto and lived in the ghetto for approximately one year.  At that time the people from the ghetto were being "relocated" and on the way to the train station, Avrum pulled his family out of line and told them to run.  They were shot at by German soldiers but got away and for the rest of the war they hid in the forests and barns.  Avrum and Chava were killed when they went out to find food and never returned.  Charles and his siblings were liberated by the Russians along with the other people they had been hiding with.  Charles and his siblings were then separated.  A couple they had been hiding with took Charles and his siblings went with another couple.  Charles was left alone in a train station by the couple and spent the night alone.  The next day while wandering in the city, he sat down and a family by the name of Achtenbaum saw him and they brought Charles home with them.  He lived with them three years.  During those three years they moved to France.  Charles' aunt who lived in Detroit put an ad in the Jewish paper, The Forvitz, looking for Charles and the Achtenbaum's corresponded with the aunt.  She wanted to bring Charles to Detroit so he left France for the United States in 1948.
