Hanna was born Hanna Weigler in Poland in 1913 and moved to Leipzig, Germany, at a young age. In 1932, Hanna entered medical school in Leipzig. She was forced to leave in 1934, when the Nazis prohibited Jews from attending universities. In 1935, Hanna married her fiance, Joseph Kelemen MD, and they moved to Bucharest, Rumania, where Joseph established a pediatric practice. In 1944, they relocated, with their small son, to the Transylvanian area of Hungary, where Joseph's parents lived. Shortly thereafter, they and all of Joseph's family, were de-ported to Auschwitz. Although they lost their son, Hanna and Joseph survived the Holocaust and were able to emigrate to the United States. From 1947 until 1983, Hanna worked as the nurse, receptionist, bookkeeper and lab technician in her husband's medical practice. She was well-known for her charm and elegance and she was the heart and soul of her family. She always spoke with gratitude of the "American boys" who liberated her and gave her the opportunity to become an American and enjoy the freedoms of this country.
